10 Reasons to love Moodle

With Moodle being voted the best Course Management System in Top 100 Tools for Learning 2012*, we’ve put our heads together to come up with 10 reasons to love Moodle.

1. It’s free!

Moodle is an open source learning platform you don’t need to worry about license fees. If you have skills in-house you can pick it up and run with it, if you need help you only pay for what you need.

2. It gives you control!

You’re not reliant on the viability a single vendor company, you choose where you host, you choose where your data is stored, etc. That’s great news when you’re considering business continuity.

3. It’s flexible!

Moodle’s options support a wide variety of learning activities. Assessment, collaboration, communication and making content available, making it a great solution for organisations with a broad range of learning requirements.

4. It’s adaptable!

Moodle is able to adapt with your organisation. Customisations are supported within the code for plugins, blocks and question types, not to mention authentication methods and so on. It makes the system a great little tool to support you and your organisation as you grow.

5. Its friends!

Moodle has a great active and open community for all to comment, discuss and throw ideas around. The discussions given throughout the Moodle community helps, not only support the system, but make it bigger and better – through feedback, identifying issues, suggestions for improvements and new features.

6. It’s modular!

Moodle is built to accept custom or community plugins. Build your own or choose from a vast array of plugins shared by the Moodle community.

7. Moodle Partners.

Moodle Partners support Moodle users and support Moodle financially; at HowToMoodle we love Moodle so much we contribute 10% of our income to fund maintenance of current Moodle version, the community sites and future development. There’s a global network of Moodle Partners who do the same to ensure Moodle meets current and future needs. What’s more Moodle Partners are expert in Moodle so you can adopt Moodle with confidence.

8. It’s straightforward to use.

Everyone we meet tells us how simple Moodle is to use, especially for a large system with so much potential.

9. It’s progressive.

Badges (in Moodle 2.5) allow users to record and share progress and achievements with others. Being fully compatible with Mozilla Open Badges, users can add these badges to their existing collection from other sites.

10. It’s social!

Moodle gives you tool to move beyond uploading files. In fact its original design concept was founded on social Moodle learning approaches.

Hi Gemma. If you or anyone can find a LMS or VLE platform that gives you over 20 quiz question types including pattern searching answer-checking, please let me know. As far as I can see, so far, Moodle's quiz functionality - the collective quiz engine/module and quiz plugins - is unsurpassed. No wonder since Open University has been pioneering and maintaining the quiz module for some time now. And Moodle's being used in so many colleges and universities. So in the quiz area, Moodle reigns supreme.

    Hi Gemma,
Moodle is currently translated to more than 100 languages (http://download.moodle.org/langpack/2.5/). No other LMS or VLE platform has so much support for different languages. This contributes to the world-wide use of Moodle in 87079 sites in 239 countries (https://moodle.org/stats/). So, in the languages and countries areas, Moodle reigns supreme.
