Hosting terms glossary
Concurrent users: The number of users who are performing an action on the site at the same time e.g. If you have scheduled a group of students to attempt a quiz at a certain time of the day. Understandably, this is difficult to predict and the impact on the underlying server resources will vary depending upon the action taken by the user. With this in mind our concurrent usage limit is up to 10% of the plan’s active users.
Installation: Installation of your Moodle/Totara LMS site is included with our hosting plans. This includes an unbranded, standard Moodle/Totara LMS site installation on a domain or sub-domain of your choice with an administrator account set up for you.
Major version upgrade: An example of a major version upgrade is 2.9 > 3.0. This keeps your site up to date with the latest features and bug fixes. If you have a custom theme, we’ll spend up to 2 hours resolving any issues resulting from the upgrade.
Minor version upgrades (e.g. 2.9.1 > 2.9.2) are included in your hosting plan. We monitor for major security issues that require an upgrade and we will advise you if your site should be updated.
Plugin allowance: We will approve and allow 3rd party plugins on your Moodle or Totara site subject to prior approval and sufficient support and security measures being adhered to. Standard plugins are allowed on your site. Please note that plugins will use some of your storage allowance and so we recommend that you only install plugins when required.
SSL (TLS) certificate: This certificate adds an additional layer of security by encrypting all data transfers to and from a site. The URL of your site will commence with ‘https’ and, depending on your web browser, your users will see a familiar padlock icon. Note: Although SSL has now been replaced by TLS (Transport Layer Security) this is still commonly referred to as “SSL”. However, our hosting platform uses TLS encryption.
Staging site: On request we will set up a small non-production “staging” site with 1GB of storage so that you have a safe place to experiment e.g. try out a different front page configuration or review the latest version.
Storage: The total space available for all files and data for your site, that includes files you and your users have uploaded as well as records in the site’s database.
Use of own domain name: You can use any valid domain (e.g. www.mytrainingsite.com) or sub-domain (training.mycompanyname.com) that you wish for your site if it is available. We recommend that you either use a sub-domain of your organisation or a similar domain to be consistent with your corporate identity. If you prefer us to register the domain for you we are happy to do this for an additional charge. Please advise of your wishes prior to your site being installed.
